About Our Mugs

The mug hunt is one of our favorite parts of making Mugxury candles!  So where do we hunt?

Many of our mugs come from second-hand sources:  Thrift stores, estate sales, yard sales, flea markets, antique stores, online marketplaces (like eBay) or donations. Beautiful, perfectly good mugs that just need a new home!

While we love to thrift as much as we can, we also source mugs from discount retailers, clearance sections, seasonal sales and wholesale liquidations. Very often, we find mugs that are out-of-season or on seasonal clearance, are discontinued styles or overstock being liquidated, have minor aesthetic defects (such as imperfect glazes), or have worked their way down the retail supply chain and are at risk of being discarded.

BUT we’re also picky!  We don’t just scoop up every mug we find.  We select mugs that:

  • Are made of quality candle-safe materials, like ceramic, enamel, metal, porcelain, & stoneware. That means no plastic, wood, etc. Safety first!

  • Have interesting colors and/or designs. We try to find mugs with a little personality that we can use as inspiration for a scent design.

  • Generally, do not have words on the side. We’ve made some exceptions, but for the most part we want to let the colors and patterns take front and center.

After we clean our mugs, and before we turn them into candles, we go through a few steps to ensure they’re safe

  • Inspect for any flaws/cracks we may have missed

  • Perform a water safe test: We check for any leaks while we measure the mug volume

  • Perform a flame test:  We test a lighter flame directly on the interior of the mug to ensure the lining doesn’t discolor, melt or crack when exposed to heat

Even though we are diligent in our safety checks, we recommend that you never leave a burning candle unattended! That’s a good practice for any candle!
